USA Bus Lines

In what situations do you stop or not stop for a school bus?

I can't remember if you stop for a school bus if you're going the opposite way on a NON-divided 4-lane road. I'm pretty sure you don't have to stop if the road is divided and you are in one of the opposing lanes.

Public Comments

  1. Not in VA
  2. Upstate New York, every vehicle, no matter what road or which direction, must stop when a school bus has lights flashing and loading or unloading students.
  3. both directions stop; the reason is that you can't predict when a stupid kid will get off the bus and run across the street
  4. i would suggest checking with local law as these type of laws are usually a local one, when in doubt stop. unless they changed it here it is anytime a school bus has red flashers you stop as long as your roadway is not interrupted with the roadway of the bus. (median is an interruption no break in pavement is the same road and you must stop)
  5. If the RED LIGHTS are flashing you STOP! Why? Kids are crossing the street. They do have to cross the divide on a divided road, common sense in driving should tell you. A good source of information is your states DMV hand book. Go to search type in your state dmv then click on the information listed good question a* for u
  6. The rules may vary from state to state. Generally, if there is a median where vehicles are not supposed to be, e.g. grass, traffic traveling in the opposite direction to the bus is not required to stop. If the only thing separating the lanes is a turn lane or a double line all lanes are required to stop as long as the lights are flashing.
