Can you pass a stopped school bus if there is a median between the roads?
Ok, so a bus is stopped, going the opposite direction your road leads to. There is a median in between the bus and your side of the road, do you have to stop or is it safe to go? I knew this would sound kind of confusing, so I drew a diagram. The QUESTION MARK ("?") is the vehicle in question. Is it lawful for it to continue and not stop when there is a median in between (and yes, I know you have to stop when there is NO median in between)? This is a question for drivers in the UNITED STATES only. http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5482/go9oh.png ####### I'm in Texas. And guys, please, give me an accurate answer. I don't want to second guess myself and end up with a ticket.

- I think it depends on the state, but in Alabama (where I live) it's illegal. It doesn't matter whether or not there is a median, all lanes must stop.
- In your case, yes you should be able to pass the bus. If it is a 4 lane highway with a median. Now it may not be that way in some states, but every state I have lived in so far that is the law. (Ohio, Wyoming, Florida and Nevada)
- NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP AS LONG AS THE KIDS AREN'T CROSSING INTO YOUR LANE
- I think you can pass in the driving book it says that you can pass if there is a physical barrier
- In Texas, if the bus driver waves you on, you can pass. If the driver has out his/her flag on the side of the bus, you must stop. Very few flag a driver on.
- My advise is go to where you get your license and ask them if they dont have the answer get a book and read about it! If you have any doubt Stop then you dont have to worry about a ticket.
- If it is a 4 lane highway you don't have to stop for a school bus on the other side of the road.
- I didn't look at the image but in PA and NJ, you don't have to stop if there is a physical concrete barrier down the middle of the road. My physical barrier, I mean something that is 1or 2 feet high or higher that would prevent the kids from simply running across the road. If there is no barrier of this type, then you have to stop when the bus signals are flashing.
