Why are bus stops normally placed before the intersection?

Rather than after it which seems safer. Thanks to all who answered. I cannot choose so I will put it to a vote.

1. LOL i asked myself that many times. I am not sure why and it is annoying to be behind the bus. I guess they have to put them some where huh? Here some are before and some are after so i think they just put them where they can.
2. thats where most people become lazy and decide .. hey a bench.. ill wait .. Oh a bus... - see so it isnt a useless tatic
3. In NYC the bus stops ARE after the intersection.
