How do you get into Manhattan?

I am looking into living and working in New York City (preferably Manhattan) and I have heard that it is a lot cheaper to live in some of the other boroughs or New Jersey. I was just wondering how I would get into New York from places such as NJ and Brooklyn (e.g. if there is a subway or bus service) as I cannot drive and wouldn't fancy driving around New York anyway!

  1. If you're living and/or working in Manhattan, there's a very good chance that there will be a train station or bus stop close by. I am a Native New Yorker who never learned how to drive because I never found the need to. I was born and raised in Manhattan and then I moved to Queens for about 3 years. It was an easy commute from Queens to work everyday in Manhattan. About a year ago, I moved to Northern, NJ because the rent prices were unaffordable for me. The commute is still easy via the NJ Transit and Path trains. :) Good luck!

  3. There are plenty of buses and trains and ferries to get you into Manhattan from the outer boroughs and/or New Jersey. Some areas will offer multiple options for your commute - i.e. a friend who lives in Riverdale can take the MetroNorth commuter train, the subway or the express bus to her office in midtown. Taking the subway will always be the cheapest option, as you can get an unlimited monthly MetroCard. The express buses and commuter trains will be more expensive, but in some areas (New Jersey or Long Island) are the only option.
