Any advice on traveling with my dog?
I have a little 5 lb puppy that I am having a problem taking with me from Memphis to Oklahoma City. Husband is in the military and I am meeting him in OKC to head to our duty station and Airlines and Greyhound buslines wont allow him on with me! Any advice on how to get him their?

- You can take a dog on the plane with you in a small dog carrier that can go right under your seat. I travel quite a bit and have seen many dogs in carriers on the plane. Check with your airline again.
- Delta, United, and American Airlines will let you take a small pet as carry-on luggage...see links for guidelines.
- Can you rent a car?
- You can rent a car and drive or fly with your dog or (ship your dog through different airlines). I know there are some airlines that don't allow animals; however, I know there are some that do allow dogs. I've seen it first hand @ the airport. Here are some: Delta: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/special_travel_needs/pet_travel_information/pet_requirements_restrictions/index.jsp American Airlines: http://www.aa.com/content/travelInformation/specialAssistance/travelingWithPets.jhtml;jsessionid=JKZ4ZKYUZZIL1EAJJMVU1D2QBFFS4VMD?anchorEvent=false United http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51255,00.html Continental Airlines: http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/default.aspx?SID=6CC3968B7E1B4504808B6370AFAA9B85 Northweat Airlines: http://www.nwa.com/travel/animals/index.html You should contact each airline for a price quote as well as other information. I know when I had to take my dog with me to college (I lived off campus). I drove across the US in a rental car with my dog. It was definately worth it. (Either take her with me or give her to the shelter/rescue. So...I took her). Good Luck.
- Don't know about the bus lines, but are you sure about the airlines?! Usually they allow 2 pets per flight and as long as you can place the pet under the seat in an airline-approved pet carrier. When we moved, I did just that with our 10 lb. poodle. To keep her from barking, the vet recommended a very small dose of Benadryl (check with your vet, please!) being administered about 1/2 hour before take-off and preceded by a nice long, last minute potty walk (if possible). Our dog was a bit groggy (again I urge you to not do Benadryl until after you speak with your vet), but she behaved beautifully. Maybe you need to call your airline again to see if perhaps it was just a case of the flights you wanted already had filled the "2 pet per flight" limit. Good luck in OKC!
- Contact your health proffessional and ask him/her to submit a letter stating that your puppy is a therapy dog and needs to stay with you. Most places accept this and even most airlines will allow the dog to travel right with you instead of luggage.
- They actually have a transport service that will take your dog anywhere in the country. It is a van service. I can't remember the name, but look on the internet.....
