Is An Italian Greyhound, Whippet, or Normal Greyhound a better pet?

I'm looking for friendliness with other pets, and people including small children mostly. If i can provide any other information that will help you answer my question, ask me to do so, and i will.

  1. All Greyhounds that I have come in contact with are AWESOME!!! and all were off the track and for those dogs to be that good for what they go through I think says a lot about their breed. I'm not sure what kind of other pets you have but Greyhounds are a hound and are programmed to go after small game, so bigger dogs I think would be fine. Children I have heard no complaints about them with them. They are really friendly breed, you can do anything to them and they let you do it even if they are in pain they really are a great dog. But these are my expereinces I hope they've helped you!
  2. It depends on how much space you have. Italian Greyhounds are shy, and if the children are not well behaved, an IG would not be the best pet. However, if the children are REALLY rowdy, no dog would work well. A regular greyhound is a big dog, and puppies will be rambunctious-so if the kids are shy, this might not work. A whippet, for a smaller yard with well behaved children, would be my pick.
  3. Whippets - does not bark, howls/cries Italian greyhounds - high strung. more energetic Greyhounds - surprisingly are very calm and don't require that much exercise. Try a rescue and get an older one. there are a lot of rescues
  4. I would stray away from an Italian Greyhound if you want a dog to play with children. They aren't bad dogs, but VERY fragile and easily hurt. With children and other dogs around you run a very high risk of the little thing getting hurt badly. My friend had an Italian Greyhound that got stepped on by a bigger dog which ended up breaking the things leg so badly it required surgeries and plates to fix the poor thing and it always walked with a limp. Whippets are good dogs, but from what I've seen of them, they are very timid and may not be up for playing with a ton of other dogs at the dog park. The same goes for regular Greyhounds. They are more laid back, timid animals. I think if you are looking for a good family dog that you should probably look at Lab Retrievers or Golden Retrievers. These are much better family (and children) dogs.
  5. Well , i would get a whippet as they are gentle and loving or a normal greyhound would be nice as they get ditched if they lose more than 3 races which i think is awful. Italian Greyhounds are too fragile for kids. there are many adoption agencies around the world where you can get retired race dogs.
  6. I've owned Whippets since the 70's. I don't consider them a great pet for small children. IG's are NOT a good choice for small children. The IG's are just too fragile and tend to be very high strung and nervous. Whippets are ok with well behaved children, but again, they tend to be soft and rather nervous dogs. So, if these are your only choices, I'd go with a retired racing greyhound. But, I think you may want to look at Labs and/or Goldens.
