I want to adopt a italian greyhound?

we live in Leverstock Green, Hemel Hmepstead, Hertfordshire and we really want to adopt a dog. most breeds arent suitable for us, but the Italian Greyhound seems to be perfect. Only, there are no rescue homes nearby where they have italian greyhounds and there are no puppies for sale near us which r italian greyhounds. how can i find an italian greyhound without going more than an hours car journey away from leverstock green as i hear it is stressful for the dog!

  1. Be patient and the things you want will come to you. It's really hard to find these beautiful dogs but i waited 7 months to find one and i did. She was definitely worth the time waiting.
  2. umm. probably your not going to find one then becuz i had that same problem finding a white Chihuahua. but i made sure that i was getting him from a GOOD breeder. so please dont get a dog were you dont know where it came from becuz most likely it came from a puppy mill. so please find the information on it when you find the dog you want. also dont get a dog at a pet store its bad news. they go threw a lot of crap just to get to the pet store. but no its not stressful for the dog. we got my dog about 4 hours away from my house. and it was a really little dog. he was nervous at first but then he got used to it after about 20 minutes then just slept on my lap the way home. well good luck. =D
  3. There are thosands of greyhounds around this country being put to sleep even at a young age because they simply don't run that fast. The sport of greyhound racing has a lot to answer for, the dog has a bad image and many people wouldn't take one as a pet so they are destroyed. It's brilliant you are looking to have one, just don't take a puppy when there are so many being put to sleep. Need to find one? Easy, try the RSPCA or your nearest dog track and you'll be spoilt for choice.
  4. what is the hitch?
  5. Think very carefully about Italian greyhounds. 1/. They can't run for nuts in those red Italian stillettos they wear. 2/. You can't house train 'em, they pizza all over the place. 3/. Have another look at your address. If it should inadvertantly get lost, you think it's got a hope in hell of remembering where it lives with THAT lot? Lol. Just joking, good luck and happy hunting, Danny. .
  6. Why specifically an Italian greyhound. Some lurchers and whippets would have a similar size and personality and there are lots of them available for adoption. A full grown normal greyhound is a big dog but they usually are gentle and not over active in a house. Adopting any sight hound can be a problem if you live in an area with lots of cats or small dogs around as they tend to chase them. Some greyhounds are difficult to house train if they are used to being kenneled, but this can usually be sorted out. I love lurchers and think they are great dogs.
  7. Get in touch with your local dog's trust, you may be lucky and find one there.Good on you for wanting to adopt one,i've adopted two ex-racing greyhounds myself.Your best bet will be going online and searching for italian grey's close to where you live, this may include a journey longer than an hour, but if that's the breed you're after then it'll be worth it.Some dogs do enjoy going in the car, both my boys love going for a run so i would'nt worry about it.Good luck with your search.
  8. Get the rescue home to drop the dog off , offer them petrol money . They will then have a chance to check your place out to make sure it's suitable for the dog .

  10. If you can find a track there's usually a rescue nearby. Go on line and Google greyhound rescue or shelters. I've know several people who have adopted an older greyhound from rescue and they all rave about them. Good luck.

  12. I'm afraid the closest (only) Italian Greyhound Rescue I've found was in the Manchester Area. It's good that you've done research and that you've found a breed you think would be good for you, but are you sure that no other breeds will do? Italian Greyhounds aren't particularly common in rescues, so I'm not sure how easy it will be for you to find one, but it's entirely possible that you'll find the right dog for you in rescue regardless. Speak to the staff in your local all-breeds rescue.
