is my dog a whippet or an italian greyhound?
I recently rescued a 2-year old dog and i'm not sure if he's an italian grehyound or a whippet, though he is obviously one or the other. he looks like a purebreed. he weighs 21lbs which is smack in the middle of the two standards. does anyone know of any other key distinguishing characteristics between italian greyhound and a whippet? Edit: here are some photos, since you asked. <a href="http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/?action=view¤t=ears2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/ears2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/?action=view¤t=regal.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/regal.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/?action=view¤t=guido_chair.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/guido_chair.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> hmmm. html code didn't work and i can't edit the post. i'll try again. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/ears2.jpg http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/triciabee/regal.jpg

- Go to the AKC website. There are standards listed for both breeds.
- I would say it's probably a mix- but more likely whippet than IG- most of the IG's I have seen are INCREDIBLY small- maybe 5 pounds!
- Check it out:
- A whippet - the Italian greyhound should only get to about 12lbs in weight and 15" at the shoulder, so yours is well over I.G breed standard, but online for the whippet. Some Italian greyhounds do go a little over the breed standard - but not almost double!
- He could be a mix of the two, or a badly bred version of one or the other.
- Italian Greyhounds are tiny...like 6-10lbs. It's more likely that you have a whippet or a whippet mix. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/italiangreyhound.htm http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/whippet.htm Edit: He's a beautiful dog...love his coloring. I would say he's definitely a Whippet...IG's are tiny little dogs and he's not.
- Do you have a picture? I think we're all curious to see.
- hm..could be either actually. a friend of mine used to have ig's, all purebreds from reputable breeders, and they turned out to be large for the standard. they were both around 20 lbs. now my whippet, who is also purebred and from a reputable breeder is huge for a whippet at 50 lbs. seems like these days, whippets and ig's tend to grow up a bit larger than expected, so i wouldnt be surprised if your guy is a big ig. his features resemble that of an ig, more so than a whippet, in my opinion. also, whippets rarely wind up an any shelters/rescues (unless a breed rescue) since they are a pretty protected breed.
- Your dog is an Italian Greyhound - no question. I have been showing Italian Greyhounds for almost 10 years, and the dog has unquestionable IG characteristics. He's what we call a "biggy iggy!" Check out http://www.iggyplanet.com to learn more about iggies.
- He looks a lot like an Italian greyhound to me. Whatever the breed he is lovely.
- He looks a lot like my Italian greyhound so I would say Italian greyhound... how long is he?
- Your dog is most certainly a Italian Greyhound! I have one and he looks exactly like yours! Just like humans Italian Greyhounds come in size ranges and yours is a larger one. A Whippet has a different face and body. Your dogs color is classic Italian Greyhounds , he's a Blue Dilute ! Very sweet dogs !
- Hi there, I think your boy is a Whippet (and he is absolutely gorgeous). Cheers
- It's a tough call, but I would say he's an IG. Weight is a determining factor to breed, but it doesn't necessarily mean your guy is a whippet, as my wife and I own a heavier than average IG (15 lbs), and I've seen 20 lb IGs before. I think I would have to see more pictures, but from looking at the shape of he's head, I would say IG.
