- There are many in rescue, they are active, will often run off if not in a fenced yard and are not for kids as their legs can be fragile. As with most toy breeds they can be hard to housebreak. My g/f rescued 2 and they were both cute, 1 had a better temperament then the other and she did run off from her owner and was found in an hour safe. But she had run quite a distance, they are sighthounds bred to chase rabbits in their larger forms, Whippets and Greyhounds.
- Getting a dog should be a family decision. ALL members should be in agreement. Trust me.
- What do YOU know about IG's? Have you ever owned a sight hound before? IG's are small and cute but they are also very, very active and very very fast! You need a way to exercise this dog safely everyday. Although they are very easy to live with indoors and are quiet, when they are outside they need to run and you need to provide a safe place for that exercise. If you do not have a large fenced yard, an IG is probably not for your family. You all need to agree on the breed of dog that comes into your household. Think about how much time you have to devote to a pet everyday. ALL need exercise, some more than others. A Bischon or Lasa Apso can do just fine with a 15-20 minute walk. My three shelties are walked 3-4 miles a day, about an hour, plus we play ball or frisbee. An IG would need more than that. If you like a short haired small dog, what about a chihuahua? So, your mom probably has a valid reason for not wanting an IG. Why don't you research other breeds and come up with some suggestions. Go to AKC.org and you can read about different breeds, their characteristics and temperament. Good luck and have fun.
