Does my snowboard need to be packed for the greyhound bus?

I'm getting the Greyhound bus, and was just wondering if they require you to have it in a bag or anything, or if you can just bring it your snowboard without any covering.

1. it would just go in the lower compartment. Just to be sure I would call the greyhound people. I would put it in a bag just to be safe
2. It doesn't have to go in a bag, but you risk the chance of it being scratched or damaged.
