How thoroughly do they check your bags on the Greyhound bus?

I'm going to be riding the Greyhound bus soon from Pennsylvania to Florida and I was wondering how thoroughly they check your carry on bags, or if they check them at all? I want to bring some "personal," non-harmful items with me on the bus in my purse, but I'm not going to if I'm going to get checked. I'll just keep these items in my pockets or something. If anyone has ever been on a Greyhound bus and could provide some information as to how they check the bags and luggage, it would be very helpful.

1. My Son took a "Bong" over 400 miles on Greyhound, so obviously...not very well...
2. I recently took Greyhound from L.A. to San Francisco and back. The only time they looked at my bags was on the return trip they had a table at the front entrance of the station, where they checked all bags coming in.
