USA Bus Lines

I am traveling on a Greyhound bus this weekend to New York City. Should I be nervous about this experience?

I am worried about crazy people, cleanliness, theft, etc. Can anyone offer any advice or tips for traveling via Greyhound?

  1. It's a safe mode of travel. There are crazies pretty much everywhere these days. Just keep your hands on your stuff at all times. Keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings. I wouldn't have a problem traveling that way. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
  2. Where are you traveling from? Your best bet is to keep your stuff near you at all times since you might fall asleep. Alotta times people stink so carry some breath mints with u to distract you from the smell... other than that...have a safe trip
  3. If you're going Greyhound, do not worry. It'll be a safe ride on the inside (if that's what you mean). When you get to N.Y., you'll get out near 42nd Street. If you arrive at night, there'll be lights everywhere!!!!! You will be close to 8th Avenue also. Depending on what you want to see, you need to walk to higher streets: 43-57th. You may want to see the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center between 48th and 49th off 5th Avenue. Enjoy the city, like everyone else will be doing.
  4. I traveled across the country on a Greyhound bus in 1977. I didn't like sitting for three days with nothing to do, but other than that is was okay. I have run into as many crazy people on planes as I have in buses and trains (one each). Other than wishing that they would go away, I am no worse off. Greyhound cleans their buses (inside and out). I found the bus to be as clean as a train or plane. Theft will not be a problem if you keep your carry-on with you. The luggage in the luggage compartment is safe. If there is something you can do while sitting in a moving vehicle, bring it with you. If you will be doing any sleeping, bring a travel blanket and pillow. You will also need money for food. The bus drivers stop at truck stops. You are not going to visit any five star restaurants while on the bus.
  5. As with traveling anywhere keep aware of surroundings and keep valuables close and never unattended. Wash hands often and enjoy the adventure which may include a few crazies just don't take them personal they are part of the experience and respect them too.
  6. I wouldn't worry about safety, intercity bus travel is safer than planes or cars (or so Greyhound claims). Yes, there will be a few dirty individuals of doubtful sanity here and there, but with all the passengers and employees around they're more depressing than they are something to worry about. As for cleanliness, well, the buses usually aren't that bad aside from the occasional sticky floor (spilled soft drinks and stuff), the terminals are usually tolerable to nice (they've been renovating them) but sometimes might have a dirty bathroom. As for theft, I wouldn't leave valuables unattended but its not like you're going to get mugged or anything. I would be careful about stepping outside the terminals in some cities as they are sometimes in the ghetto. The Port Authority terminal in NY is nothing beautiful but it seemed safe and tolerably clean to me, and its in lower Manhattan and you can take the subway out so I don't think you need to worry there.
