Which breed should I get?

Yes this is a repost, but I added a lot more info in this one, so hopefully I will get some better answers. So I made a list of a bunch of small breeds and put YES, NO, or MAYBE next to all of their names. I really don't know which to pick though! It would really help if you could put 5-10 of the best dogs in your opinion out of the ones I listed. I really need help picking! I am looking for a small dog that I can compete with in conformation. Most are pretty good. It would really help! Oh, and you can add dogs to your list even if they say NO or MAYBE next to them. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IS A PLUS! I am sorry if I am asking a lot! Affenpinscher YES Australian Terrier YES Basenji MAYBE Beagle YES Bichon Frise YES Border Terrier YES Boston Terrier YES Brussels Griffon MAYBE Cairn Terrier YES Cardigan Welsh Corgi YES Cavalier King Charles Spaniel YES Cesky Terrier YES Chihuahua MAYBE / NO Chinese Crested Dog YES Cocker Spaniel YES Dachshund MAYBE Dandie Dinmont Terrier MAYBE English Toy Spaniel MAYBE Finnish Spitz MAYBE Smooth Fox Terrier NO Wire Fox Terrier MAYBE French Bulldog YES Havanese YES Irish Terrier MAYBE Italian Greyhound YES Japanese Chin YES Lakeland Terrier MAYBE Lhasa Apso YES Lowchen YES! Maltese MAYBE Manchester Terrier (Toy) NO Miniature Bull Terrier YES Miniature Pinscher MAYBE Miniature Poodle YES Miniature Schnauzer MAYBE Norfolk Terrier YES Norwegian Lundehund MAYBE Norwich Terrier YES Papillon YES Parson Russel Terrier (Jack Russel Terrier) MAYBE Pekingese MAYBE Pembroke Welsh Corgi YES Pomeranian MAYBE Toy Poodle YES! Pug YES! Puli MAYBE Pyrenean Shepherd YES! Schipperke YES Scottish Terrier MAYBE Shetland Sheepdog YES Shiba Inu MAYBE Shih Tzu YES Silky Terrier MAYBE Skye Terrier MAYBE / NO Swedish Vallhund YES! Tibetan Spaniel MAYBE Tibetan Terrier MAYBE Toy Fox Terrier YES Welsh Terrier YES West Highland White Terrier YES Yorkshire Terrier MAYBE / NO I have a German Shepherd / Boxer mix, so I want the breed to generally get along with other dogs. I will also be getting the dog as a puppy. My current dog is great with other dogs, and not territorial at all. Yes, the Parson Russel Terrier IS the same breed as the Jack Russel Terrier. They changed the name to Parson Russel Terrier in 2003. I have 2 cats, 1 dog, and 2 fish. I am looking for a dog who is friendly with people and dogs (I will be getting it from puppy hood so I know MOST breeds will be fine if properly socialized then). I am looking for a dog that is, well not exactly "low maintenance", but I don't want a very NEEDY dog that whines constantly and needs constant attention. I want a dog that won't try to kill my cats, but it is okay if they were bred for hunting, as long as it can be trained out of them. This is what a based most of what I said about each breed on. Grooming is a minor concern, I am willing to take the dog to the groomers once a month, and I can devote 10-30 minutes grooming the dog every day. I posted it again because LIKE I SAID, when I posted it I didn't have the additional details. I don't want a "puggle" because there is no such thing as a "puggle" and I am not going to support some idiotic BYB! I want a REAL breed of dog that I can show in CONFORMATION. Something you have probably never heard of because you think dogs like "puggles" are real breeds! Lovemydogs, this is the SECOND time I have posted this question, and I added a lot more personal info on this question... My dad is the one who helped me make the list that I put up, and he said that I can get one around April. I know that showing a dog is more than just showing up. People can be so rude here. This question is not about how to show dogs, it is just me asking for peoples personal experience with the breeds I listed. I meant the first part of your answer was rude. I know not to get my heart set on a specific breed, that is why I asked for TEN, that way one of them is bound to end up near me. I am not going to pick a breed just because the breeder or mentor is closer. Well I must have been mistaken about the Parson Russel Terrier, but I looked on a dog breed website and it said that they had changed it in 2003. I don't mean low maintenance for grooming, I am willing to do that, I mean low maintenance as in, not very needy. My dad had a JRT when he was little, and it never tried to eat his cat. That's why I thought that you could train them not to eat cats.

  1. Get a cat.
  2. just narrow it down to the breeds that are a "YES"
  3. PAPILLON! I have a 2 year old male Papillon and I swear he is the best dog in the world! He is so smart, cute, he is just a really good dog. I bathe him once a week, I blow dry his hair only because he gets cold. I brush him maybe 2, 3 times a week. He is not high maintenance at all. I have 2 German Shepherds, One is 5 the other 3. He gets along great with them! They'll run together and they have never fought, They get along really well! If I were you I honestly would either get a Papillon or a Pomeranian. Trust me you will not regret it! I hope I helped. I wish you the best of luck!
  4. you put yes for both pug and beagle so why not get a puggle?!
  5. If I remember correctly, you want a dog to get into showing with...correct? And your dad JUST got your the puppy you have...right? How about, you ask your dad first and talk it over with HIM as to what, if any new dog you get. Also, if you want to get into showing, you don't just show up with a dog. You need to speak to some breeders and show homes in your area first. You should work with them before you do anything. What good is it looking at a Welsh Terrier if there isn't a breeder or show home willing to work with you within 200 miles. ETA: Actually, there was nothing rude about my answer. If you want to get into showing, you should look around on the breeds you think are something you would like and see if you can find someone near you. Doesn't that make a whole lot more sense than getting your heart set on a breed only to find out there isn't a good breeder near you. You need someone to mentor under first. Not a puppy first. You work with the breeder and then THEY help you select a show quality puppy. My answer was based in fact and reality. If you want to get into showing, this is how you do it. Not compile a list for strangers to look at. Start researching breeders through the AKC website. Send out some emails. THAT would be productive.
  6. Since you have cats dogs andfish, I would go for a minature dachshund, they are adoreable and I have one!
  7. No the parson is not the same breed as the Jack. The jack and parson split off from one another and are separate breeds now. Go look up the standards for each. The jack is much shorter than the parson is, and the heads are slightly different. AKC recognizes the Parson and the Russell (basically those who wanted to show their shorties gave their breed the name Russell terrier). Jacks are strictly working dogs. You can NOT train out hunting instincts, get that out of your head now. Like I said go look up Youtube vids of Basenji yodel, see if you can live with that. Mini bulls will chase your cats most definitely. In fact the majority if not all the terriers you listed will chase and try to kill your cats. Finding majors is next to impossible. There are better lines in the UK than there are here. The best line here is probably Bonsai and Eggstream. The Finnish Spitz is not a small breed, they are medium sized, they are larger than anything on that list. Very barky and it's an annoying bark. Very uncommon for the most part, so finding one is going to be a hassle. Finding majors (show) will be next to impossible. Show grooming should be done by you, unless you can find a local groomer that knows proper show grooming. Needy dogs? Don't get a toy breed, as that is what they are bred for, companionship. Pulis are not low maintenance they need specific grooming or you can ruin that coat. Need a job to do most of the time. I can tell you now that finding a show quality frenchie is going to be difficult and you will need to jump through many hoops. Frenchie breeders can be very stingy. Great dogs, but stubborn like all bully breeds are, bark quite a lot. Poodles are high maintenance grooming, and you really need to be precise with it. Hours of grooming goes into them. They can be yappy, like any toy not trained properly. Tibetan terriers get their hair parted which is something you would need to learn. It is not hard once you learn. Great dogs, funny attitudes, lots of hair. I know the top breeder in the UK, so was around them while I was over there. Toy fox terriers have the terrier attitude and spunk and energy. With terriers even the small terriers you need to learn proper sparring, for most of them. Like the welsh and the Scottish terrier, and PRT and a few others. Pyrenean shepherds are going to be harder to find as they are fairly new to the AKC. Alot of these breeds are going to need lots of careful thinking and lots of searching for breeders as they are not common.
  8. bichon frise or a poodle I own both breeds very intellengent and great dogs!
