USA Bus Lines

Questions about traveling by greyhound bus?

I'm traveling across the US by bus for the first time and have no idea what to expect, and im gonna be by myself 1. What's the difference between a transfer and a layover? 2. I think transfers/layovers involve switching buses. Do they? 3. If yes on #2, is everything pretty easy to navigate? Like would I have to be as dumb as a rock to get confused or miss a bus? 4. Are the times on the schedule listed in my current time zone? Like, if it says i'll arrive at my destination at 8 pm, is that 8pm my time, or 8pm destination time? 5. The schedule lists "meals available" at some points during the trip. What does that entail?

  1. Greyhound is actually a group of many franchises in different parts of the country. So...in some areas you will be on a nice bus with good service, and in other areas the bus may be a century old, , pretty gross and 2 hours late. A transfer should mean that when you arrve at a station, your net bus shoud be thee and you transfer uickly...a layove definetoy means there is more than an hour to wait...however, buses are often late and the wait times are longer than they say. They do NOT bother to announce these delays...just let you sit there and wonder. Always go to the counter and ask when your net bus is epected and at what number spot it wil b e parked. Often there is a sign with this info posted. The times are given in the local time. Meals available means the bus station has a snack shop or there is one very close...or the bus wil stop at a McDonalds or such. Most snack shops in bus stations are awful...so if you stop at a good one, buyfood to cary with you for later. Now...your checked bag...WATCH it like a hawk. Every time you change buses, gives them a chance to lose it. You need to SEE them put your bag on the new bus. They lose bags easily, and dn't give a hoot. Maxmum they will pay for a lost bag is $250.00...way too low. They lost my bag..did not find it for 3 mnths. I was going to a sedding and had to buy all new clothes. When they finally found it ,was2000 miles away and MY problem to figure out how to get it.I figured out what city they left it in and told them, and even called them myself a couple of times...and they denied having it. Of course, when they did find it, that is exactly where it was all those weeks. So...WATCH your bag.
