Is an Italian Greyhound a good dog for me?

We live in a house with a small garden but would be able to walk 1-2 times a day and a lot on a weekend. My mum is allergic to some dogs and we would be out during the day for 3-5 hours. We like gentle, friendly dogs. Would an Italian greyhound be good for us and if not which dog would?

  1. If your mother is allergic to dogs I wouldn't advise you get one. Greyhounds also need large spacious areas to run around in, not ( small gardens). They also need constant socialization and can be skittish if not properly socialized. My overall opinion is no
  2. I agree with Eyes - your mum will likely be allergic to anything with short dog fur. It isn't the fur so much as the dander - they have a bit of natural oil, too - as small as they are, it would still be enough. They are also not all that friendly, but very nervy and skittish. Some other suggestions would be a mini Poodle or even a standard, Bichon, even a calm Airedale. You might also visit a Cavalier King Charles breeder for tea, and see if she is allergic to them - they are small, sweet, and don't require such a daily hike, although they are happy to go. With your situation, an adult dog from a breed rescue or reputable breeder (since they rescue their own dogs, and oftenm have something suitable) would be the best thing for all involved. And 3-5 hours for any adult with no medical problems or separation issues should be fine.
  3. Hi, Greyhounds generally have a wonderful temperament, being friendly and non-aggressive, although some can be aloof toward strangers. Give them a treat, though, and they're likely to become a friend for life. Here's more info: http://lnk.nu/dogtime.com/zgc.html
  4. The Italian greyhounds I have known were gentle, friendly dogs. However, they also wanted to be right next to me or in my lap most of the time. If your mother is allergic to dogs, you might not be able to allow that, I honestly dont know what dog to suggest, because I have no way of knowing what she will be able to tolerate. Maybe you should visit your local shelter and see what gentle friendly dogs they have there, and which ones do not trigger her allergies.
