Does anyone know the real facts about the greyhound dogs at the Dairyland Racetrack in?
Kenosha, WI? The story going around is that there are 900 greyhounds which will be killed unless they are adopted out. First of all It's hard to believe that there are as many as 900 dogs at that track, and secondly, Wisconsin wrote the book on laws protecting retired race dogs.

- 400-600 dogs are looking for homes or they may be euthanized. Here are some links http://www.kenoshanews.com/home/dairyland_dogs_to_find_new_homes_6729688.html http://news.racinepost.com/2009/11/500-dairyland-race-track-greyhounds.html
- I don't know about the numbers, but can tell you that most of these dogs are practically thrown away or put to sleep once they can't race any more. Dog racing is all about the money, and little to nothing about love of the dog. Many of the dogs get injured from racing, and you can bet the dog track isn't going to be spending their money on healing a dog that will never be able to race again. There are greyhound rescues who will take in as many as they can. But, again, I can assure you many get put down. The laws might be on the books, but this never assures that people abide by them.
- It is just a rumor, there are 200 to 300 dogs available. They dogs will not be put to sleep. They do have a program where they are looking for homes. This is according to Ellen Paulus who heads the state chapter of Greyhound Pets of America. Greyhounds placed as pets will be spayed or neutered, brought up to date on all appropriate shots and vaccinations, and will undergo a thorough health examination by a licensed veterinarian. The adopting family must pay a $175 fee to help cover these costs. Contact the Diaryland Greyhound Adoption Office at (262) 612-8256.
