How much does a ticket for failing to stop for a school bus cost in NYC?
Basically, I got a ticket in New York city for failing to stop for a stopped school bus.. It's 5 points on my record but how much does the actual ticket cost for a first time offender?

- For a first timer the penalty is something like $400. Courts are very unforgiving here. NYC didn't used to have this law on the books until the relatively recent past. Most drivers continue to ignore this to this day. I stop, but I squeeze right to allow others to pass if the street is wide. If it is not, I stop and deliberately block traffic behind me.
- While Bill K is correct, it is also important to mention that drivers very rarely get stopped for any moving violations at all here in NYC, and they almost never get pulled over for this one. Just yesterday I saw an article about a woman trying to increase the penalties for this offense in her home state (Missouri, perhaps?) because her son was killed by a driver who went around a school bus. I read it thinking, "This happens all the time here and no one ever stops a driver who does this!" Not only do people go around school buses, but I often feel harassed by drivers behind me when I DO stop for a school bus! They try to get me to go around the bus by being aggressive in back of me (you know, honking their horn and edging closer and closer to me.) It's really awful!
