- Amtrak can be pretty expensive, but it is faster than the buses and will take you to Union Station, which connects with Metro. There's Bolt Bus, which I tried, and that picks you up near the Herald Square area in NYC (33rd or 34th Street and 7th Avenue) and drops you off near 10th and H streets NW, in a large parking lot one block north of Metro Center. I liked it because it's a very short walk to a Metrobus stop. I've never ridden Megabus, but I haven't heard anything bad about it. Both Bolt and Megabus have very good rates, and Bolt has WiFi (not very good though) and outlets on the seats. I don't recommend Greyhound because the DC bus terminal is even nastier than Port Authority, and the neighborhood is rather sketchy.
- Amtrack is good, so is the Chinatown bus which is only for $15. Good luck!
- Amtrak will be a comfortable option over coach bus any day. But you have to be willing to pay a little more. AAA cardholders get 10% off fares, Student Advantage cardholders get 15% off. MegaBus is very very cheap. Go here for current schedules between the two cities: http://megabus.com/us/schedules/newyork_washington.php Try to avoid any of their shared buses run by EASTERN Travel.
- Bolt bus is the way to go. I went to NY for a conference at the end of May and returned in the beginning of June on Bolt-I had a great experience-leather seats, free wifi, nice driver, lots of leg room and I sat by myself-all of us did except for couples. Amtrak is expensive-I took Amtrak to NY for a conference when I was pregnant is was fine also-but the bus is cheaper!!!! https://www.boltbus.com/
