Mexico city to Zihuatanejo and back by bus - how and how long?

I'm going to be in Mexico in December, flying in to Mexico City, spending a few days there, then heading down to Zihuatanejo by bus. Specific questions: 1) How long is this bus trip? I've read 8-9 hours, and that it's only 4 hours from Mexico City to Acapulco, which looks to be about the same distance. What gives? 2) Which bus station in Mexico City do buses to Zihuatanejo depart from? 3) From Zihuatanejo, I actually need to get to San Miguel de Allende, also by bus. Do I need to go back through Mexico City or is there a better route? I know the two main bus lines between Mexico City and Zihuatanejo are Estrella de Oro and Estrella Blanca, but their websites don't show the schedules/routes/dates I want. (I speak and read Spanish--that's not the problem). I've done a ton of web searching for this stuff but if there are any hidden gems out there with good bus schedules or whatever please let me know. Thanks!

  1. 1) The reason for the discrepincy of time is the "Autopista del Sol" A toll route from Mexico to Acapulco and there is no such to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. You are indeed best to go to Acapulco and on to Ixtapa. It is now a 5 hour ride to Acapulco and depending on your connection, another 4 to Zihuatanejo Bing maps says it is shorter to go direct from D.F but they did not count on getting stuck behind a truck and they are driving directions for a car not a bus. (2 Tasquena is the referrence to the Central de los Autobuses al Sur. From the airport you can take a Collectivo for $24usd (3 Yes you are best to go to D.F and make your way to the Terminal Norte where you can catch a abus to San Miguel de Allende Schedules do not amount to a hill of beans in Mexico. There are 700 plus bus companies in Mexico and you will find you dont have to wait more than a half hour.
