Any suggestions of cheap transportation between cities in the UK?
I am an overseas student in the UK based in Portsmouth. I want to visit cities in the North like Manchester and Sheffield but the price of a National Rail or National Express ticket from Portsmouth to Manchester is very pricey. Does anybody know any cheap/budget bus or train services other than Megabus/Megatrain?

- A coach is your best bet. National express is best, portsmouth to london is only 99p not sure about north but heres the website http://www.nationalexpress.com/coacheslanding.aspx
- if you book well in advance you can often get cheap deals on train tickets, especially if you're not travelling at the most popular times ... keep checking on http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/?href=&T2ID=99_200862718584 check out whether you're eligible for student or young persons railcards http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/railcards.html and for student coach cards on National Express http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/Offers/StudentCoachDeals.cfm as these can give you quite a good discount once you've registered with either the trainline or the national express websites and given them your email address, they send you information about any special offers they've got on
- Book on-line with National Express they have some very good deals.
- Coaches are slow and uncomfortable. Firstly buy an annual railcard which will give you a 34% discount on your rail tickets www.railcard.co.uk. Secondly book your rail tickets as far ahead as possible for specific trains, and you will find some very low fares indeed. Visit the ticket office at Portsmouth & Southsea Station or www.virgintrains.co.uk
