How do you get from grand central to either of the bolt bus stops in NYC?

(34th and 8th by tick tock, or 6th between Grand and Watts?) Which is easiest??

  1. neither is particularly easy, so i'll just give you the directions of how i would get to either of these places: from Grand Central to 34th and 8th: 1. walk on 42nd Street from GC to 5th Avenue, take the M4 bus in front of the NYPL to Penn Station, get off at the stop closest to 7th Avenue and 34th Street, walk the rest of the way. 2. take the #7 train from GC to Times Square. at TS find the pedestrian tunnel to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, get out at the 40th Street / 8th Avenue side of the PABT, walk the rest of the way the 6 blocks down to 34th Street. from Grand Central to 6th between Grand and Watts: take the same directions to the #7 to Times Square. walk the pedestrian tunnel to Port Authority Bus Terminal. instead of going up to the PABT and the street, go down to the downtown platform of the A/C/E trains at 42nd Street / 8th Avenue station. take any train that comes first and get off at Canal Street. exit the station at the north end (opposite of the train direction), and walk up 6th Avenue 1 block to Grand Street. btw, the A express train is faster, but all trains stop there, so factoring waiting time for a train you won't save much time, if any at all.
  2. I find the easiest way is to follow signs for the S train at Grand Central (that's the crosstown shuttle). When the S train stops at Times Square, look for signs for the 1, 2 and 3 Downtown. Take any of those. You're only going one stop, from 42nd to 34th street. Follow the street exits to 34th street and 7th avenue, then walk a block and a half west on 34th street to 8th avenue and across 8th. The only issue might be getting oriented when you hit the street, to figure out which way is west. You could ask somebody, or you could look for the big Borders bookstore. That's on the SW corner of 34th and 7th ave, so if you're facing Borders, 8th ave is to your right.
  3. From Grand Central to 34th Street and 8th Avenue is very easy. Take the 42nd Street Shuttle (Black Line on the subway map) or the #7 line (Purple Line) westbound from Grand Central to Times Square. At Time Square, transfer to the downtown (southbound) #1, 2 or 3 trains (Red Line), which will take from there to Penn Station. At Penn Station, exit the subway into the Station and follow the directional sign to the Amtrak Concourse. When you get to the Amtrak Concourse, follow the directional sign leading you to the 8th Avenue and 34th Street exit, there is an escalator there that will take you from concourse to the street level.
