what can cause an Italian Greyhound to scratch a lot?

I feed him fishoil and it seemed to help at first. I feed him Avoderm canned and dry food.

  1. Fleas, allergies, mites. Could be anything. Take your dog to the vet for a diagnosis.
  2. Parasites. Allergies. Rarely diet. All canned stuff is useless, expensive, too rich crap, btw. Makes dogs fat & picky.
  3. too much vino & pasta
  4. lt could be fleas, it could be allergies, you need to see the vet and find out. My Lab suffers from allergies which flare up more during the summer, medication from the vets help to keep it under control before she scratches and nibbles that bad that she causes hot spots.
  5. give him puppy chow or dog chow ask the vet it can be the food or 100 more things
  6. He might be allergic to processed food, try giving him cooked chicken for a day.
  7. You might want to have him tested for allergies. I have a dog that suddenly began scratching about a year ago. The vet had him on several different meds that didn't end the scratching. We also did salmon oil (and still do). We finally decided to have his blood screened for allergies. Turns out that Alphie is extremely allergic to dust mites. Gone are my area rugs. My leather sofa gets wiped down weekly with a cleaning product that kills the mites. I also wash his dog bed once a week. The itch is gone! I also vacuum every other day with a bag less vac.
  8. Perhaps an allergy from one of the food you gave. Avoid giving him oily foods, sea foods and the like. It would give them itchy feelings and skin allergies. Fleas and tick would be a possibility as well. Go give him a warm bath. :)
  9. The Italian Greyhound is sensitive, alert, smart, and playful. He's affectionate with his family, and loves to snuggle with you and stick close to your side all day. Strangers may see a more shy, reserved side of his personality. http://dogtime.com/dog-breeds/italian-greyhound/personality
  10. Take him to the vet and have him checked. It could be any number of things: airborne allergens, poor diet, food allergies (including chicken and/or lamb -- dogs have become allergic to those products because they're so widespread now so vets now prescribe things like venison or duck and potato). It could be the products you use to bathe him, or he could even have other problems like thyroid which could cause him to itch.
