USA Bus Lines

What can I expect when riding the Greyhound Bus?

Hi I'm 15 and my boyfriend is 16, we are both going to visit my mom at the end of May. The bus will be going from Sioux Falls, SD to Portland, OR. How many stops will there be about? What I should know and expect during before and after riding the Greyhound? Thanks.

  1. I rode from Minneapolis to Seattle some years ago and we probably had around 15-20 stops. So you can probably expect a little less than that. Greyhound should give you maps for their routes with all the stops along the way. Keep your bags close, don't leave them behind when you make stops. Leave a book instead or something non-personal on your seat during your stops so you'll have your seat when you come back. Since you'll be traveling with somebody, you don't have to worry about sitting next to smelly folks. There'll be a lot of them on the bus. Make use of your bathroom breaks, your driver will tell you how long you have before the next chance to use the bathroom so go even if you don't have to. Bring plenty of snacks and things to keep yourself busy. A small travel pillow will also come in handy. Have fun!
  2. Probably something like six stops. Don't sit by the toilets, they smell. Bring water, hand soap, music, and some good reading. There will be lots of black people, depending on what the makeup of the area is like. That's just area thing, not to be racist or anything - just happens to be that way. So yeah, don;t wear flashy clothes and be a pre-Madona. Just prepare to bring lots of food, money (for more food) a cellphone with one-touch dialing just incase you're like... kidnapped and thrown in the back of a truck while staying at a wayside. Oh yeah, prepare to live off the bare minimum. Bring some pillows too, but don't have like LOADS of luggage.
  3. you can expect to stand on the bus for over 2 hour if the bus even shows up you can expect the bus to break down you can expect restroom not to work you can expect to get lied to by the ticket agent you can expect to get stranded by the driver you can expect the driver to get lost you can expect the driver not to speak English you can expect to miss your connection you can expect impossible to get to sleep on the bus you can expect to say Never again you can expect your nerves to shot well You asked! you might want to look into alternate transportation such as Amtrak
