- Check with the Greyhound rescue organization.
- You can get one pretty cheap, there are organisations that rescue them once they retire, and they are said to be the most awesome pets/friends. To take them to anohter country is another thing, with possible long term quarentines, which would be very unfair to one. Expensive too.
- For racing dogs, the rule of thumb is that the price of a pup is the same as its sire's stud fee. Greyhound stud fees range from $500 to $1500. There is a catch, though. National Greyhound Association breeders are unlikely to sell you a puppy as a pet. A race-ready Greyhound costs $3,000 to $4,000, even more if it has been proven to be very fast at the training track. They would prefer to raise and train a pup to track age and sell it to you at the higher price. Contact a local adoption group. They occasionally get puppies from breeders that cannot race for whatever reason. AKC breeders will sell you a puppy, but there are only 120-130 AKC puppies bred annually. Contact the AKC to get names of breeders near you.
- Go with the retired racer. Greyhound puppies can be incredibly 'challenging' if you are inexperienced. They are smart but move to their own beat.
