What are the best games to play with an Italian Greyhound?

I recently rescued a 6 year old Italian Greyhound. He seems accustomed to our daily routine and comfortable with us. The only problem is he doesn't play much. He won't play with toys, fetch, or run around the yard. We can get him to run after us if we "hide" in the house, but that is about it. THEN, he stays up all night roaming around keeping us awake. What can I do to keep him active during the day so he will sleep at night?

  1. fetch! (sorry didient know he cant fetch. teach him tricks that will give him a good pastime it is for my hyper sheltie
  2. Italian Greyhounds are fabulous racers. If you want to give your dog a good time, try bringing your dog to a local lure coursing event and see if the club has practice runs that you can test your dog on and see how they do. At home, try fuzzy, squeeky things on a light line that you can bounce around and act like little prey. IG have wonderful prey drive and love to chase small, fuzzy things that dart like prey. This is very natural. Check out Yahoo Groups to see if they have IG groups. Maybe you can hook up with local owners in your area or region. Maybe there are breed clubs you can attend events.
  3. You might want to get your Iggie involved in running an obstacle course. IGs are very, fast, have loads of energy and can jump really, really high. I used to take my gal, Bella, to IG playday to run with the other IGs in San Diego. The only thing that I could find active enough to exercise Bella, was another Greyhound. That is aw some that you rescued an GI. I was the foster parent of my little gal and eventually adopted her. She passed away a couple of years ago. My gal got a lot of exercise bossing my male MIn Pins. If you get him a female IG, she will make sure he exercises a lot. Enjoy!!!
