How do you stop a bus?

To pick you up.... Because today me and my boyfriend wanted to get on a public bus for the first time, but we were not near any bus stops... so we just started walking back to his house..when we saw a guy just wave down a bus and it stopped.... Now I went on the SMART bus website (Metro-Detroit's Publtransitist) and I think it said go to a bus stop.... So I'm wondering.... If I am not near a bus stop.. Can I just flag down a bus to pick me up... Or will the bus driver be mad and not pick me up? I also have another question.. Is there anyway I can find a bus stop near me? I tried to look online, but I couldnt find anything... Some sort of map or something online? Please :)

1. depends where you are.. where i am they wont stop unless your at a bus stop
2. Well I live Near there and Where i live If you Flag them down they don't mind just not on a really busy road. I would just go to a bus stop to make sure it will stop
3. it depends on the bus driver and also you must be CLOSE to the bus stop , or near an intersection where the bus is already at a stop at a red light or something like that , that makes it more easy for the bus driver, and also, if the driver is friends or knows the person that also determines whether he will stop or not.
4. depends on the driver if hes mad lol he'll probably just drive by and tell you to go to the bus stop and wait for the next one but buses should stop as long as your at the stop and sometimes different buses come to the same stop so you have to wave to stop the bus you want to go on, point is if the drivers a nice guy he will stop:)

It's possible that they will pick you up if you do wave them down, but it's much more polite and overall a lot easier for all parties involved to just find your nearest bus stop, calculate how long it is to walk there and take that into account with what time the bus is due to arrive. If you still have troubles getting them to know you want to get on the bus, stand about two metres away from the bus stop and approach the side of the road as you see the bus. I find that's the best way to get their attention without having to jump around and wave at them.

8. No you cant flag them down to stop. they have bus stops in certain places for safety reasons. if they stopped for everyone it would take forever to get to your destination. So just walk to the nearest bus stop
