orange county to hollywood: bus & rail?

i've checked the orange county transit website as well as the 5 county rail website and still am a bit confused. i am wondering how to get from newport beach (west coast hwy) to the hollywood walk of fame. i can't rent a car so i need to use public transit but am unable to figure out their maps and schedules. if anyone is familiar with these systems could you explain to me how to get there and back? thanks. oh and if anyone knows a cost for this trip that would be great.

  1. Use the Metrolink trip planner~you will need to get into Union Station which is the main connecter. Use the Metrolink (train)...then use can transfer at Union Station and use the red line (subway) and get off at the Hollywood station. It leaves you right at the walk of fame.
  2. The most direct way involves riding Amtrak, and that is a bit expensive, so here are two alternatives. Both are based on departing from the pier/PCH. Both involve a 4 step process, and about a 3 hour trip each way. Fare is in the $5 each way range. 1. Ride OCTD # 47 (Brea Mall) to Fairview/Westminster. Transfer to OCTD # 60 (Long Beach) to the Long Beach Transit Mall Ride the Metro Blue Line to 7th Street Transit Station Transfer to the Metro Red Line. Exit at Vine Street or Highland Ave. 2. Ride OCTD # 47 (Brea Mall) to Harbor/ Victoria Transfer to OCTD # 43 (La Habra) to Disneyland Bus Center Transfer to Metro # 460 to Union Station Transfer to the Metro Red Line. Exit at Vine Street or Highland Ave. The return trip is just the reverse. Make sure you don't stay too late. Some of your connections may not run past 9:00 pm.
  3. OCTA if you can get to huntington beach during am peak hours OCTA has an express bus to Los Angeles http://www.octa.net/pdf/pdf/dec08/route701.pdf
  4. Check out Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner. It goes from Irvine to LA. From wherever you are in Newport Beach, you can take the OCTA bus to the Irvine station (see www.google.com/transit for OCTA schedules) and then the Amtrak straight up to Union Station. From there, take the red line subway and get off at Hollywood/Highland, which is right at the walk of fame. The cost should be $1.25 for the OCTA bus, $12-15 for the Amtrak (or you can use Metrolink too, they run the same route but more limited hours) and $1.50 for the subway. Note that the last southbound train leaves Union Station at 10 PM, so make sure you're back before then.
  5. By west coast highway do you mean the pacific coast highway? There is an orange county no. 1 bus that travels PCH to Fashion Island. From there you can take a no. 75 bus to the Tustin Metrolink station to Union Station, and then the redline subway to hollywood.
