USA Bus Lines

Has anyone rode a greyhound bus before?

I'm need to go out of state in march and so far I've searched plane tickets, jet tickets, train tickets and bus tickets and the bus seems to be cheaper. How was your experience when you rode the greyhound bus, please serious and honest replies only.

  1. It's totally fine. I thought it would be dumb. It was just like a car ride. Nothing different.
  2. It was fairly miserable but it got me from point A to point B. Amtrak was much better, less like cattle, more like a passenger.
  3. It was great. No problems. Some of the buses are really nice.
  4. It SUCKS!!! And I only was on for a 2 hour bus trip. If it's any longer you are going to hate it. It's dirty and you never know who you will sit by.
  5. Yes I have twice Don't be too friendly there are some creepy people on their, they seem nice and normal at first but then they either start cussing, or talk about random things this one lade was saying "do you see those babies above my head, well they're mine" just keep to yourself no eye contact Good Luck!
  6. It is common for prison system to use the bus. Both times I rode the bus, there were inmates going home from prison and there were fights! It depends on where you are riding the bus--be smart, stay out of trouble, you'll be fine.
  7. It's been many years, but I swore I'd never ride a bus again. They take a 20 hour trip by car and turn it into 30 hours or more. We'd be tooling down the highway and all of a sudden the bus driver would get off on some little two lane road and we'd ride for about 20 miles to some little out of the way town where we would pick up one passenger and then 20 miles back to the highway. I was starving and we passed by one McDonald's and Burger King after another. When we finally stopped for food it was at some greasy spoon joint with sky high prices. We stopped there because the driver ate free.
  8. It really just depends on how far you are going I have been on the bus for 3 nights and 3 days several times and its not a very pleasant experience.but the 8 hour trips I took were really not that bad if you can handle sitting next to strangers having to switch buses every so often.just make sure you don't sit in the back near the bathroom because it stinks back there.
  9. Yes! A round trip from New York to Washington, DC to see a "friend." It was night and I was in the back of the bus so it was hard to sleep. Usually when I fall asleep, an explosion couldn't wake me up ^_^ but I guess the sound and motion played apart in keeping me awake. I even cut my trip short and did not have to pay extra for the change so that was cool.
  10. yes! its not a dirty gringy bus if thats what your thinking. i went to all the way to marylad and it was reallly fun.
  11. Depending on where you are going--it takes along time, dur to stopping for passengers etc.- See if they have an express, going close to where you are getting off. Don't sit in the back- It smells like the bathroom. There are decent people who ride the bus-- but there are also folks who are down on their luck-- just be careful, use your head, don't strike up conversations with anyone that you wouldn't talk to elsewhere. I've used the bus several times-- Good Luck !!
  12. do NOT use greyhound you could get yourself killed either by the driver crashing the bus, or get killed by another passenger which has happen! also if you are making connections and your first bus is late the connection bus will NOT wait for your bus lot of times greyhound uses contractor for some their routes and those drivers dont speak english! now some drivers cant even find the station! and now if you are lucky enough to find the station and get a into a very long line only to eb told the bus is too full and they will send a section section yet they mean 24 HOURS LATER sometimes you might get lucky my friend did he was at Portland station going to Seattle the 10:;00pm came though too full he was told there was another bus on the way 10:30pm no bus 11:00pm 12;00midnight the station is now closed all passengers waiting for buses must wait outside 12:30pm still no bus, 1:00am whats that its bus what the driver doesnt know how to get to Seattle? and doesnt speak much English? also if you take baggage with you are reasonable for it for you to take to the bus and to remove it Greyhound will NOT transfer bags to the connection bus also I know of another incident where the a passenger got themselves locked into the restroom! and the driver didn't speak english they finally has to call the firre depart to get the passenger out of the bathroom and I know about another incident where the restroom overflowed and you now had some nice raw sewage and human feces flowing down the Ailis the bus driver said its NOT my problem and kept going now ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT to take Greyhound>? a train would be more comfy for sure
  13. pretty long, lots of different people it wasn't bad though, just bring money for when they stop at places and an i-pod or something so you don't get bored .. have you looked on taking an amtrack? they are probably faster
  14. I've had the "pleasure" of taking the bus twice, both for long trips (once from Florida to Montana and once from California to Texas). I didn't have any real problems either time, it's not the most comfortable way to travel but it'll get you there. Both of my trips took 3+ days. It's cheap, yes, but as with many things; you get what you pay for. My advice: dress comfortably, low key, nothing fancy take some cash for stops (most will be McDonald's or gas station/truckstops) but not a whole lot for obvious reasons gum to chew Baby wipes and hand sanitizer could become your most favorite things in the world try to be open minded about the people on the bus with you, there will be a wide variety of personalities and backgrounds something to keep you occupied (book, ipod, whatever) The majority of people have no trouble traveling this way but use common sense and stay safe. Good luck and safe travels!
