Can you take an earlier scheduled Greyhoud Bus than what's printed on your ticket?

I know that they charge you a $10 fee if you switch to an earlier departure date than what's printed on your ticket, however does it really matter if you just take an earlier scheduled bus on the same DAY to the same destination? I was thinking about doing this to have a better chance of catching my transfer. Please, no guesses. Please answer if you have had experience doing this or work for Greyhound. Thanks!

1. From my last trip it seems to me like they handled it like standby on an airplane. There was no charge, but no guarantee.
