USA Bus Lines

Do you need a special tour bus license to drive said bus?

I've had my eye on a broken down tour bus a neighbor of mine keeps forgetting to sell. It's in rather bad shape, but I have the funds to fix her up. I was just wondering if you need a special tour bus driver license?

  1. It depends how large it is, and if you plan on using it for a business. For example, school bus drivers must have a special permit and license. Contact your local DMV.
  2. By tour bus, I assume you are talking about a motor coach. Yes, you need a CDL because it has air brakes.
  3. If this is in the US, yes. Specifically in CA, you need a commercial drivers license, class B, with "passenger endorsement". The bus, if private, also needs to have "NOT FOR HIRE" written on both sides to distinguish you from a charter bus (i.e. a bus for hire), among other registration concerns. Your state and county/city may have other requirements. --- Kasey C, PC guru since Apple II days The gene pool could use a bit more chlorine.
