- Well if he swallowed it whole, there is a good chance it will come out that way. I would watch him closely for any signs of distress. I would call a local vet and inquire as to their thoughts. Accidents happen, don't beat yourself up.
- Don't Panic. How big was the rib? I know Italian Greyhounds are tiny. If it chewed it you should be ok. Monitor it for a couple of hours & if it starts choking you need to try & get doggy to open wide & put your fingers in it's mouth & try to poke the bone out. If you cannot get to the VET ASAP All dogs eat bones given the chance. I love Italian Greyhounds they are like miniature Whippets, I have two bitches a pup & an old girl.
- Call the vet and ask what they recommend, if she chewed it up or if she just swallowed it could make a difference. My Husky got into a half rack of TGI Fridays Jack Daniels ribs one time, I left them on the counter lol... bad idea.. anyhow she ate all of it bone, meat and half the container, I called the vet she said unless she was showing obvious signs of distress and having problems pooing and I noticed blood in the stool not to worry about it, and that was 6 whole rib bones.. so one.. Im not sure still call your vet. Again my dog crushed and chewed the bones, didn't swallow them whole so it really depends on that how serious I would think it was ( I am not a vet so... ) Edit: Wow thats talent a tiny little thing swallowing a bone whole :0( , anyhow in that case take pup to vet get an xray and see what they say if it will pass or if it needs to be removed... Sorry
- Considering the age and breed of your dog, I'd strongly reccommend that you take it to the vet before one of two bad things happens; 1: The bone perfs the bowel and causes internal bleeding and intense pain. 2: Your dog does manage to somehow get the bone to pass through it's system, however, the bone could cause him/her to have a bad rectal tear when he/she tries to poop it out. Regardless, an x-ray to check to see where it is and how it's progressing.
- I feed my dogs (a beagle mix and a St. Bernard mix) a raw diet, which in essence means they eat bones on a daily basis. Both dogs can eat an entire chicken leg quarter, bone and all, and think nothing of it. Iggies are not large-mouthed dogs so if he swallowed it whole, I would assume it's not a huge rib. My concern is only the fact that it was cooked, which could lead to splintering. Is your dog acting like he is any pain? I would monitor his behavior and his poop. You'll see it come out. It may surprise you... it won't come out really hard, because of a dog's digestive juices. Dogs are perfectly well-equipped to digest bones (what do you think wolves and coyotes eat?) but next time make sure it's not cooked!
