Do you have to stop when a school bus stops at a railway crossing? I live in Ontario, Canada. Yesterday, a small school bus flashed it's lights to stop at the railway (as all buses have to). I saw people in the opposite direction stop for the bus, but I didn't. Are you supposed to stop for a school bus that stops at a railway, even though they're not letting kids on or off? If so, I thought you only had to stop for a school bus if it's stop sign was out, or children were being let on or off of the bus?

I stopped too close to a stopping school bus but did not pass it...? I am a 17 year old male from New York, have never been in any sort of trouble either with the law or even with my school. I was driving one day and I saw a bus with the yellow flashers on coming in the opposite direction. There was on car in front of me and we both readily slowed down. The bus just kept slowly coming toward our two cars as both my car and the one in front of me cautiously proceeded. I knew the car in front of me was confused as well because it stopped, while the bus still had yellow flashers on, and then the car quickly sped by the bus, leaving me in the awkward situation. The bus then stopped completely and put the red flashers and stop signs out, so I immediately came to a complete stop where I was, not wanting to go any further and risk passing the stop signs. As I was now, admittedly, too close to the bus, the bus driver angrily motioned for me too back up, which I did. She then proceeded to write something on a piece of paper (I'm guessing my License Plate Number) and we both traveled in opposite directions. No police officer saw what happened, and I am not trying to get out of it or say it was not my fault, I made a mistake and did not know where the bus driver was going to stop, and therefore I traveled too far and was in a terrible location. I am a very cautious driver, and a worrisome person, (as you can see by me writing this questions no more than two hours after the incident). I have not been contacted by the police, but am wanting to know what sort of consequences I am facing, and believe me I know I made a mistake and should be punished, I just don't want to go to jail! If any police officers or others with knowledge of situations such as mine could enlighten me I would really appreciate being prepared for what is coming my way. A funeral procession ignored the stop sign that swung out from the bus since it was a funeral procession and they ignore stop signs as they travel to the departed final resting place. Too young to be at a school bus stop alone? My step-son is 8 years old and his father and I are disagreeing on whether he should be able to go to the bus stop alone in the morning. He doesn't have to cross any streets, and would only be out there for about 6 minutes and it is only about 2 1/2 houses away and I'd be able to see him and hear him from my window. In the winter I definately take him out because it snows here and we sometimes have to walk in the street to get to his bus stop but with the warm weather here I see no problem with him being able to walk out to the bus stop or standing there for a few minutes. I see some of these parents who let their children who are obviously younger than he is walking to school by themselves and crossing streets that have no crossing guards and some of these streets are pretty busy streets. Is he being too over protective or should I just let it drop and take him out? There are no dangerous people in out neighborhood that we know of. We have even gone online and looked to see if there were any known pedophiles in our neighborhood and there isn't. Our neighborhood is a very good one...a few families with kids and a lot of elderly couples.

Passed a stopped school bus in NJ? I was stopped behind a school bus in NJ, he was stopped for about three minutes, i had no intention of going around the bus once so ever, since i know the tickets for these are heavy, and there is no reason to endanger the kids. His step-father and I both work so the only other option is to enroll him in a before/after school program at his school and pay for that service. My husband suggested we let him ride the bus in the mornings and only have to go to after school care until we got off work. Once he shows he is responsible enough to do the before school thing, we'll consider letting him ride the bus home and be there alone until we get off work (he'd only be home alone for about an hour after school). We'll also get him a cell phone to call if anything was not right and we do have family fairly close by should he need something right away.
